Like I usually say in my journals, you really don't have to read this. I just thought I might as well write some journal before school starts (I start on the 6th).
I'll talk about this book I finished and books I want to read, US Open, Hetalia, and that's about it.
So I think I'll steal
's thing with the bullet points so you can navigate yourself.
The Song of Achilles and some booky stuff
US Open
Hetalia!!!!!!!!
So first the (awesome) book. It got me back into Ancient Greek, I swear (I kind of lost my interest in Greece a while ago). It's called The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, and (obviously), it's about Achilles from Ancient Greek.
But it's told in the POV of his best friend/lover (yes, there's been this whole thing since, like the Iliad, about whether or not the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus (the best friend guy) was romantic). So that's kind of what the whole book was about...it was pretty good, I have to say. First time I've read a book that has homosexual characters (yup, it's about time!)
Overall, I thought it was well written...there were just some things that didn't work for me.
First. I felt like the book was being told by a girl. As in...it was as if Patroclus was a girl. Which didn't work for me...because, well, he was a guy. And that was part of the whole point of the book, I think.
Next. Period dialogue (or whatever it's called) and all the stuff. I mean, I felt like it was in the middle of World War II or World War II...not the Trojan War. And part of that was that they didn't speak as if they were in Ancient Greek.
So there was another reason...but I forgot it. Maybe I'll add it later.
Anyway, the book was really good, and I also liked the whole Briseis/Patroclus and Deidamia/Achilles thing. (I really would have been fine if Patroclus and Briseis got together...but yeah. That would be totally different). And then I like that it was told by Patroclus in the first place.
My favorite characters were Odysseus, Patroclus (unusual that I like the protagonist), Briseis, Ajax, Apollo, and Athena. Yeah.
The characters that annoyed the heck out of me were Thetis, Achilles, and Pyrrhus. I also kind of wish we got to see more of the Trojans/Anatolians (Turks!), like Paris and Hector. Because really. All I got to read about them was Hector killing Patroclus and Paris killing Achilles. So.
So go read it if you want. Although I have to warn you that Achilles and Patroclus "do it" once and then other times suggestively, also with other people. And since some of it takes place during the Trojan War (not all of it, though) so there is a lot of war stuff.
Now I have to go find another book to read. I want to read this book called Bloodlands that's about Hitler and Stalin, but I need to go to the library and get it first...same with The Devil in the White City (which my dad wants to read) and Moneyball (which my dad also wants me to read).
Also, since I'm still into Percy Jackson etc. I'm reallllllllyyyyy waiting for the Mark of Athena.
And I want to get back into the 39 Clues so I need to read some of those.
Ah.
Okay! US Open! So I went to one Qualifiers thing two weeks ago (I think?), and two of the actual US Open Tournament days last week. I didn't get to see any really big names like Djokovic, Federer, or Sharapova (because they were all playing in the stadium my dad and I didn't buy tickets for). BUT. I
did get to see Victoria Azarenka from Belarus play (she's currently the best women tennis player in the world) which was awesome. Awesome. AWESOME.
Still, I got to see a lot of good matches! Saw this French guy, Paul-Henri Mathieu (I think) play a Russia guy, Igor Andreev. That was such a good match...the French guy one, which was sad for me because I was rooting for the Russian, especially near the end.
Also saw Richard Gasquet (France) play some American (I forgot what his name was...oops.) We left that one because Gasquet was obviously going to win...easily.
Okay, everywhere I go, there's this French fanclub. And they're all screaming in French. And it's so weird and cool at the same time, because I love it when they're there! Otherwise the audience is too boring...and the French player tends to win when the awesome fanclub is there.
The other two matches I saw that were memorable were Janka Tipsarevic (Serbia) and Brian Baker (USA). Tipsarevic won (and I was rooting for him), and he's really fun to watch. He has these weird glasses...so he's easily recognizable.
And before that we saw Lucie Safarova (Czech Republic) and Nadia Petrova (Russia) play. I wasn't really rooting for either...Petrova was going to win anyways (and she did), but I guess I would have been happy if Safarova won instead.
That was a few days ago though, so the results are completely different now. Quarterfinals soon. I wonder who will get into the semifinals
Azarenka and Sharapova of course ?
AAAAAAAAAHHHHH FANGIRLING TIME FOR HETALIA!!!!!!!!!!
Okay, not really.
Just.
Is there really going to be a Season 5 called The Beautiful World?
I sincerely hope there will be.
Sincerely.
Because right now, all I can wait for is the Baltic character song and BTT character son. I mean, the little thingys they give...sneak peeks or whatever...they're SO SHORT.
So far I like the Baltic one though...especially Estonia in there.
Okay, so that part was short.
BUT REALLY. IS THERE GOING TO BE A SEASON FIVE? I NEED IT CONFIRMED.

Also, poor Germany. He's surrounded by high maintenance weirdos. Or at least annoying weirdos.
Weirdos that I love.
